LANAP Laser Gum Treatment · Marysville, WA
Treat gum disease with a laser, not a scalpel.
LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) uses a thin laser fiber placed at the gumline to treat infected gum pockets. It is done without a scalpel and without stitches, and its goal is to help the gum reattach to the root.

The laser fiber is placed gently into the gum pocket at the gumline.
Who it can help
LANAP may be an option if:
- You have moderate to advanced gum disease with deep pockets.
- Your gums bleed, are receding, or teeth feel loose.
- Deep cleanings alone haven't controlled your gum pockets.
- You'd like an alternative to traditional cut-and-stitch gum surgery.
Dr. Choi makes the final recommendation after examining your gums.
How LANAP works
- Exam and planning Dr. Choi completes your comprehensive periodontal evaluation and reviews your X-rays.
- Treatment with local numbing (one or more visits, depending on need) The areas are numbed. The laser fiber treats the infected pocket lining, the roots are cleaned of tartar, and the laser helps form a protective seal at the gumline.
- Healing The goal is reattachment, or new attachment, of the gum to the root. Bone growth may be seen on X-rays, though it isn't the main goal of treatment, and results vary. We give you clear home-care instructions.
- Follow-up visits We check your healing, re-measure pockets, and set up regular maintenance cleanings, typically every 3 months.
Before and after
X-rays before LANAP and 4 months after; results vary.
Recovery
Most patients have little pain, mostly mild soreness. Follow the instructions we give you, and see our Post-Op Care page anytime. If something doesn't feel right, call us at (360) 386-5055.
LANAP or traditional gum surgery?
Both treat deep gum pockets in different ways.
LANAP laser
A laser treats the pocket from the gumline. No scalpel and no stitches are used, and the gums are not cut back.
Gum surgery
The gums are opened with a scalpel so the roots and bone can be cleaned and reshaped directly, then stitched closed.
For milder pockets, a non-surgical option like perioscopy may be a first step. Dr. Choi recommends what fits your exam.
